The Romanian born soprano Ana Maria Labin grew up in Zurich. Having won First Prize in the inaugural Concours Ernst Haefliger in Bern she began her career singing repertoire ranging from baroque and classical roles to operetta.
Ana Maria Labin made her débuts at the Teatro alla Scala Milan and at the Opéra de Paris as Valencienne in Pier Luigi Pizzi’s staging of Die lustige Witwe under the baton of Asher Fisch and was invited to take part in the prestigious Staatskapelle Dresden Silvesterkonzert (New Year’s Eve Concert) in the Semperoper Dresden, in which she performed arias by Franz Léhar under the baton of Christian Thielemann. This performance was broadcast on the German TV channel ZDF and released on CD and DVD by Deutsche Grammophon.
Ana Maria Labin’s other major opera house débuts include La Contessa Le nozze di Figaro in a new production directed by Jo Davies for Opera North, La Contessa for Prague National Opera, Erste Dame Die Zauberflöte at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, the Opéra de Montpellier, and in Simon McBurney’s new production at the Netherlands Opera and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Naïad Ariadne auf Naxos for Glyndebourne Festival under Vladimir Jurowski and Armida in Robert Carsen’s production of Handel’s Rinaldo for Glyndebourne On Tour under Laurence Cummings.
Miss Labin’s operatic engagements have also included Manto in Steffani's Niobe under Thomas Hengelbrock at the Schwetzingen Festival, Klara in Haydn’s Die Welt auf dem Mond under Julia Jones at the Jennersdorf Summer Festival, Celia in Mozart's Lucio Silla, at the Mannheimer Mozartsommer under Dennis Russell Davies and Adam Fischer, Soprano in Purcell's King Arthur in a production by Corinne and Gilles Bénizio (alias Shirley & Dino) under Hervé Niquet with Le Concert Spirituel at Opéra de Montpellier, Versailles, Metz, in Japan and on DVD, and Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas for Festival Retz. She has also sung concert performances as La Baronessa Irene in Haydn’s La vera costanza under Andreas Spering, Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Héro in Berlioz’ Béatrice et Bénédict.
Ana Maria Labin sang in the inaugural Gala at the newly built Opera House in Bahrain under the auspices of the Aix-en-Provence Festival in a programme of Mozart arias and duets with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Antonello Manacorda.
Ana Maria Labin made her début at the Vienna Konzerthaus performing Haydn’s Il ritorno di Tobia with the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic under Adam Fischer, with whom she also performed Die Jahreszeiten and Die Schöpfung in the Congress Innsbruck, the Philharmonie in Luxembourg and the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt.
She performed the world premières of La Chevelure de Bérénice by Dominique Lemaître with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI under Daniel Kawka, and a song cycle by Richard Dubugnon conducted by Alain Altinoglu, both at the Festival Présences of Radio France. Her many performances in the Zürich Tonhalle have included Beat Furrer’s Canti Notturni under David Zinman, and Luciano Berio’s Sequenza III.
Miss Labin’s many other concert engagements have included a European tour with the English Concert under Harry Bickett singing Vivaldi’s motet In furore iustissimae irae and arias from Handel’s Giulio Cesare and Rinaldo, Ino in Telemann’s Ino Kantate under Michael Schneider and La Stagione at the Kasseler Musiktage, Galatea in Handel’s Acis and Galatea under Raymond Leppard with the English Chamber Orchestra (for DVD), Alexander’s Feast with the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, Bach Mass in B minor with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Pergolesi Stabat Mater in Spain, Mozart Vesperae solennes de confessore in Besancon and Pergolesi Stabat Mater and La Maddalena al sepolcro with Collegio Ghislieri under Giulio Prandi at La Chaise-Dieu Festival.
Other conductors she has worked with include Marc Albrecht, Rudolf Bibl, Bernhard Haitink, Christopher Hogwood, Andreas Schüller, Alexander Soddy, Jac van Stehen, Michael Schneider and Jory Vinicour.
Ana Maria Labin recently made her débuts with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome in Mozart Vesperae Solennes de confessore K339 under Mo Claus Peter Flor, and with Les Musiciens du Louvre under Marc Minkowski as La Contessa at the Palais de Versailles. Other recent engagements include Konstanze Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail for Glyndebourne On Tour and Strauss’s Vier letze Lieder with Orchester Musikfreunde St Gallen in the Tonhalle St Gallen. She also recently made her débuts at Prague National Opera and for Opera North as La Contessa Le nozze di Figaro.
Forthcoming opera performances include Donna Anna Don Giovanni and Fiordiligi Cosi fan tutte at Drottningholm and Versailles (also under Marc Minkowski) and Donna Anna for Glyndebourne On Tour and with the Classical Opera Company.
Miss Labin's recent concert engagements include her début with Boston Baroque singing Beethoven's Ah, Perfido and Haydn's Scena di Berenice, and Telemann’s Ino Cantata at the Magdeburg Telemann Festival with La Stagione Frankfurt under Michael Schneider. Their recording of this work was recently released on the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi label.
Throughout her career Miss Labin has given regular Liederabenden and Recitals of Mélodies in Switzerland, Germany and France.
Ana Maria Labin is a Swiss citizen. She speaks fluent English, French, German, Italian and Romanian.
