Overview

The opera by Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino impressively depicts how violence and war shape people. Sciarrino composed the opera for Bern, where it will be performed for the very first time.

It's a veritable coup! The grand master of contemporary Italian opera is broadcasting the premiere of his latest work from antiquity to the Bern Opera: Then, in the darkness, a flash of fire on the horizon announces Agamemnon's arrival in his homeland. The king returns victorious from the Trojan War, but a broken man. As spoils of war, Agamemnon brings Cassandra, the prophetess whose visions no one ever believes. Upon her arrival, she sees blood flowing. A short time later, she and Agamemnon are dead.

The timeless story told in the ancient myth of the Atrides has always functioned as a mirror to humanity. Based on the first part of Aeschylus' Oresteia , Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino creates a gripping, atmospherically dense opera, constantly searching for the contradictions that characterize all times. While the Schauspiel Bern's version, with an eye on Aeschylus's entire text, explores the cycle of murder and revenge and the origins of democracy, Sciarrino places the returning Agamemnon at the center and, with him, the question of how life is even possible in a world shaped by war, devastation, and people scarred by trauma. The world premiere at the Bern Opera will be directed by David Hermann.
