Overview

One of the greatest young talents will be conducting: the young Latvian conductor Aivis Greters!

In his monumental tone poem A Hero's Life, the then 34-year-old Richard Strauss created a musical monument to a heroic artist figure and his struggle with the world. The composer left little doubt that this figure could be Strauss himself, as he used a number of musical quotations from his earlier compositions in his work. He considered himself just as interesting as Nero or Napoleon, Strauss half-jokingly stated. Alma Mahler's dazzling biography also undoubtedly falls into the category of "heroic lives." Mahler's central influence as muse and lover of countless artists (including Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Gustav Mahler, Walter Gropius, Franz Werfel, etc.) has been sufficiently researched. Her own work as a composer, however, largely remains in the background. Mezzo-soprano Claude Eichenberger, a member of the Bern Opera ensemble with an international career, will present songs by Alma Mahler alongside songs by her teacher, Alexander von Zemlinsky, in the eighth symphony concert. After her marriage to Gustav Mahler, Alma Mahler largely fell silent as a composer, as her husband strongly urged her to "from now on regard my music as yours" and to cease her own work.

Venue Info

Casino Bern - Bern
Location   Herrengasse 25 / Casinoplatz 1

One center for community, one point of contact, one concept: for the first time in the Casino’s history, the Burgergemeinde of Bern combine culture, culinary arts and events – and deliver “everything under one roof”. As the home of the Bern Symphony Orchestra and host to a variety of other concert events, the Casino Bern offers culture at its best.

Let yourself be moved, inspired and tempted in the newly renovated cultural venue – conveniently located in the center of Bern’s beautiful old town.

History meets modernity! The Burgergemeinde Bern and Director Ivo Adam have created the perfect place to come together – for the city, the region and beyond.

Since its opening in 1909, the Casino has been the cultural and social meeting place in the heart of Bern – and will remain so in the future. For over one hundred years it has radiated a unique atmosphere and grandeur; and the list of illustrious guests that has included Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly and Herbert von Karajan will continue to grow. For the first time the casino owner, the Burgergemeinde, has assumed management of the culinary offerings, under the direction of Ivo Adam. Another premiere: the Casino Bern is proud to be organizing its own in-house cultural events.

The Burgergemeinde raised around 78 million francs to restore the late baroque classicist building which was reopened in September 2019. Following the motto “Back to the Future”, the renovation took care to follow the original designs from 1909 as closely as possible.
