Overview

Krzysztof Urbański, Chief Conductor of the Bern Symphony Orchestra, presents music by two composers with Polish roots: Karol Szymanowski is considered a father of Polish modernism.

Cosmopolitan, he commuted between the musical centers of Western Europe and, around 1900, became the most important representative of the "Young Poland" group of composers. He composed his first violin concerto in 1916, in the midst of World War I. With lush timbres and an unusual instrumentation including piano, celesta, and seven percussion instruments, Szymanowski created a groundbreaking work at the limits of tonality. In Bern, it will be performed by the award-winning Spanish violinist María Dueñas, who most recently thrilled audiences with her performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Mieczysław Weinberg is one of the most exciting rediscoveries of recent times. He survived the Shoah thanks to his escape to the Soviet Union, where fellow composer Dmitri Shostakovich became one of his greatest advocates. His 1968 opera "The Passenger," about an Auschwitz survivor, was rediscovered for the stage only in the 2010s, leading to a renewed interest in Weinberg's compositional oeuvre, in which his more than twenty symphonies occupy a prominent place. Guillaume Connesson's work "Maslenitsa" also takes us to Eastern Europe . The title refers to a folk festival of pagan origins and, according to Connesson, is intended as a "homage to the music I love."

Casino Bern - Bern
Location   Herrengasse 25 / Casinoplatz 1

One center for community, one point of contact, one concept: for the first time in the Casino’s history, the Burgergemeinde of Bern combine culture, culinary arts and events – and deliver “everything under one roof”. As the home of the Bern Symphony Orchestra and host to a variety of other concert events, the Casino Bern offers culture at its best.

Let yourself be moved, inspired and tempted in the newly renovated cultural venue – conveniently located in the center of Bern’s beautiful old town.

History meets modernity! The Burgergemeinde Bern and Director Ivo Adam have created the perfect place to come together – for the city, the region and beyond.

Since its opening in 1909, the Casino has been the cultural and social meeting place in the heart of Bern – and will remain so in the future. For over one hundred years it has radiated a unique atmosphere and grandeur; and the list of illustrious guests that has included Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly and Herbert von Karajan will continue to grow. For the first time the casino owner, the Burgergemeinde, has assumed management of the culinary offerings, under the direction of Ivo Adam. Another premiere: the Casino Bern is proud to be organizing its own in-house cultural events.

The Burgergemeinde raised around 78 million francs to restore the late baroque classicist building which was reopened in September 2019. Following the motto “Back to the Future”, the renovation took care to follow the original designs from 1909 as closely as possible.
