Programme
Overview

The operetta diva Madame Silvia, played by Heidi Maria Glössner, revels in memories of glamorous days and a past love – a story of fame, success, intrigue and sensation.

With The Coronation Mass , Obrasso Concerts presents two evenings of the most beautiful works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the Tonhalle in Zurich and the Casino in Bern. In March 1779, Mozart received a commission from Prince-Archbishop Colloredo of Salzburg to write a mass. Mozart was furious that the composition was subject to severe time constraints due to the reformist church service. Despite this, or perhaps precisely because of this, he succeeded in creating a work that is unparalleled in its genre. The origin of the name "Coronation Mass" cannot be definitively established. According to tradition, the Missa Brevis in C major, K. 317, was written for the annual celebration commemorating the coronation of the miraculous image in the pilgrimage church of Maria Plain near Salzburg. This also explains the festive character of the composition, which is expressed in the rich orchestral scoring.

Before the Coronation Mass, the second part of the concert opens with Mozart’s famous motet “Ave verum corpus,” followed by the popular “Alleluia” from his “Exsultate jubilate” and the aria “This image is enchantingly beautiful” from “The Magic Flute.”

Venue Info

Casino Bern - Bern
Location   Herrengasse 25 / Casinoplatz 1

One center for community, one point of contact, one concept: for the first time in the Casino’s history, the Burgergemeinde of Bern combine culture, culinary arts and events – and deliver “everything under one roof”. As the home of the Bern Symphony Orchestra and host to a variety of other concert events, the Casino Bern offers culture at its best.

Let yourself be moved, inspired and tempted in the newly renovated cultural venue – conveniently located in the center of Bern’s beautiful old town.

History meets modernity! The Burgergemeinde Bern and Director Ivo Adam have created the perfect place to come together – for the city, the region and beyond.

Since its opening in 1909, the Casino has been the cultural and social meeting place in the heart of Bern – and will remain so in the future. For over one hundred years it has radiated a unique atmosphere and grandeur; and the list of illustrious guests that has included Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly and Herbert von Karajan will continue to grow. For the first time the casino owner, the Burgergemeinde, has assumed management of the culinary offerings, under the direction of Ivo Adam. Another premiere: the Casino Bern is proud to be organizing its own in-house cultural events.

The Burgergemeinde raised around 78 million francs to restore the late baroque classicist building which was reopened in September 2019. Following the motto “Back to the Future”, the renovation took care to follow the original designs from 1909 as closely as possible.
