Overview

Following his acclaimed interpretation of Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 last year, world star Nikolai Lugansky returns to Bern with Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 – under the direction of Vasily Petrenko, who stepped down from all his positions in his native Russia in spring 2022 and now works, among other things, as Music Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Chopin premiered his Piano Concerto No. 1 in Warsaw in October 1830 – on the eve of the November Uprising of the Poles against Russian rule in the country. Just a few days later, Chopin was to leave his beloved Polish homeland for Paris, never to see it again, as the consequences of the failed uprising and the enforced Russification of Poland made a return impossible. His elegantly sparkling Piano Concerto No. 1 remains a moving document of a time of hope for Poland's independence and freedom and is today one of his most popular works. While Chopin composed his concerto in a relatively short time, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky tormented himself for almost two years over the composition of his first symphonic work. Tchaikovsky's struggles are not evident in the work: with youthful freshness, the composer succeeds in delivering a declaration of love for the Russian winter. In the first movement, for example, he depicts a magical sleigh ride that would even make Father Frost dream.

Casino Bern - Bern
Location   Herrengasse 25 / Casinoplatz 1

One center for community, one point of contact, one concept: for the first time in the Casino’s history, the Burgergemeinde of Bern combine culture, culinary arts and events – and deliver “everything under one roof”. As the home of the Bern Symphony Orchestra and host to a variety of other concert events, the Casino Bern offers culture at its best.

Let yourself be moved, inspired and tempted in the newly renovated cultural venue – conveniently located in the center of Bern’s beautiful old town.

History meets modernity! The Burgergemeinde Bern and Director Ivo Adam have created the perfect place to come together – for the city, the region and beyond.

Since its opening in 1909, the Casino has been the cultural and social meeting place in the heart of Bern – and will remain so in the future. For over one hundred years it has radiated a unique atmosphere and grandeur; and the list of illustrious guests that has included Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly and Herbert von Karajan will continue to grow. For the first time the casino owner, the Burgergemeinde, has assumed management of the culinary offerings, under the direction of Ivo Adam. Another premiere: the Casino Bern is proud to be organizing its own in-house cultural events.

The Burgergemeinde raised around 78 million francs to restore the late baroque classicist building which was reopened in September 2019. Following the motto “Back to the Future”, the renovation took care to follow the original designs from 1909 as closely as possible.
