British contralto Claudia Huckle made her Royal Opera debut in 2015 as Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte) and has since returned to sing Mérope (Oedipe). In the 2018/19 Season she sings Schwertleite (Die Walküre) and First Norn (Götterdämmerung).
Huckle studied at the Royal College of Music, the New England Conservatory and the Curtis Institute of Music. She was the first female recipient of the Brigit Nilsson Prize for singing Wagner at Operalia 2013. She is a former member of the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera, where her roles included Irene (Tamerlano with Plácido Domingo), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) and Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly). She was a member of Leipzig Opera for four years, where her roles included Third Lady, Olga (Eugene Onegin), Flosshilde (Das Rheingold), Schwertleite (Die Walküre), Hänsel, Princess Clarisse (L’Amour des trois oranges) and Venus (Weill’s One Touch of Venus).
Huckle’s other appearances have included Hänsel for Garsington Opera, Smeton (Anna Bolena) for Washington National Opera, Olga, Pitti-Sing (The Mikado) and Duchess (Torsten Rasch’s The Duchess of Malfi) for English National Opera, Third Lady for Dresden Semperoper and Aix-en-Provence Festival, Page (Salome) for Santa Fe Opera, Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia) for Glyndebourne on Tour, Marfa (Khovanshchina) for Birmingham Opera Company), Hippolyta (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) for Glyndebourne Festival and Second Maid (Elektra) with Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has sung in concert with leading orchestras under conductors including Simon Rattle and Roger Norrington, in repertory ranging from Bach’s St Matthew Passion to Mahler’s Rückert Lieder.
