About

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Gábor Káli began playing the piano and the violin at an early age before graduating as a solo pianist from the Bartók Béla Konservatorium in Budapest in 2001.

 

He has been the recipient of various awards including 3rd place in the Hungarian Piano Competition of Hungarian Conservatories and in the Hungarian National Chamber music Competition.

He continued his piano studies under Prof. Péter Nagy and, in addition, began studying conducting with Prof. Tamás Gál at the
Franz Liszt academy of Music in Budapest.

In 2004 he became an Erasmus conducting student at the University of Arts in Berlin, where he in 2008 finished his studies with a diploma. His teacher was
Prof. Lutz Köhler and Harry Curtis.

Parallel to his studies he worked as an accompanist and teacher in the singing class of Prof. Julie Kaufmann
and received a scholarship from the Paul Hindemith Company.

He was also chosen as a member of the Conducting Forum of the German Music Society (Dirigentenforum),
wich made it possible for him to participate in conducting courses given by
Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Bernard Haitink, Colin Matters, Sian Edwards and Zoltán Peskó.

As a member of the EUYO Symphony Orchestra (Pianist) he played with Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy. (International Britten Festival)

After finishing his studies he worked for two years as a correpetitor and conductor at the City Opera in Aachen, where he conducted, among others,
Puccini’s Butterfly, Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa and Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute.

As Head Conductor of the Aachener Youth Orchestra he conducted the Premiere of Henze’s Pollicino in a production with 200 children from various schools.
As an assistant to Maestro Marcus Bosch he also prepared several other Opera productions.

He recieved an invitation from
Maestro Daniel Barenboim to audition at the Berliner Staatstoper.

Since 2011 he has been the 2nd Conductor and the Assistant to the Musical Director at the Staatstheater in Nürnberg,
where he has given and continues to give an enormous number of opera, operette, musical, ballet and concert performances with the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg
including such pieces as Strauss’ Arabella, Verdi’s Otello and Prokofiev’s Cinderella.

He has been also a conductor of several symphonic cross-over projects.(jazz, salsa, rock, DJ-music)

Beginning in the season 2015/2016 he continued his work in Nürnberg
as Assistant Musical Director and Principal Conductor.
In this season he premiered Puccini`s La Boheme, a new Ballet from Goyo Montero with Berlioz: Symphony fantastique,
and the new score from Bärenreiter Verlag, Bizet: Pearl fishers.

He has also appeared as a Guest Conductor several times in the Hungarian State Opera Budapest,
in 2015 Debüt with Mozarts Don Giovanni, In 2016 Premiere Donizetti: Don Pasquale.
Also Guest Conductor in the City Theater of Münster, the Staatstheater Darmstadt and in concerts with orchestras such as
the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, the Bohuslav Martinu Symphony Orchestra and the SONARTEN Ensemble for modern Music.

He was a jury member by several singing and woodwind competitions at the Music Academy Nürnberg and in Bayreuth.

In 2016 he made his Debüt with the Südwestphilharmonie Konstanz and the Altbuda Danubia Symphony Orchestra (Budapest).

He has an invitation from the Kodály Philharmonie (Debrecen) to conduct a concert in May 2017.

His Premiers in the season 2016/17 has been very succesful with Berg's Wozzeck(stage director: Georg Schmiedleitner) and Verdi's Attila (stage director:Peter Konwitschny)

In the season 2017/2018 he is going to continue guest conducting and in 2018 will be Assistant to Maestro Ivan Fischer at Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin and also at Budapest Festival Orchestra.
Also with Christian Thielemann will he work together.

In September 2017 he conducted the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich in the 9th International David Zinman Cinductong Mastercourse
and in November Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore production in the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest, Hungary.
On 14th January 2018 he won the 1. Hong Kong International Conducting Competition in Hong Kong.He got also the orchestra prize from the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

He won engagements for the next season in Asia and Europe.
