About

Klaus Bertisch (dramaturge) studied English and Dutch language and literature, theory of education, and art education in Frankfurt. From 1979 to 1987, he was a dramaturge with Oper Frankfurt. He then went on to work with the Siemens Kultur Programm in Munich for opera houses and festivals in Germany, Belgium, France and Austria. With Volkstheater München, he was the dramaturge of and an actor in the world premiere of Franz Helm’s Kaktus. As a director, he realised the project Verschollen in EssenThe Rake’s Progress and Groots en meeslepend wil ik leven (Ansink/Martinů/Puccini) in Amstelveen, in collaboration with Marcel Sijm, and staged recitals with texts by Rilke, Heine, Goethe and Mörike. In the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, he directed Die lustige Witwe and De spelers, and various solo programmes with Opera Studio Nederland. As a dramaturge, he worked with Willy Decker on Der Ring des Nibelungen in Dresden, Die tote Stadt and La traviata at the Salzburger Festspiele and Death in Venice in Barcelona, and with Dale Duesing on L’étoile with Staatsoper Berlin.

He has worked with Pierre Audi not only in Amsterdam, but also in Brussels, Salzburg, at the Ruhrtriennale and in Madrid. He was a lecturer in theatre studies at the University of Amsterdam. Publications include the collection Schwanenmärchen, a book about the director Ruth Berghaus and numerous contributions to books and journals. He has been a dramaturge with Dutch National Opera since 1990.
