Stars of the White Nights Festival 2022

The Mariinsky`s Stars of the White Nights International Music Festival directed by Valery Gergiev was held from May 24 to July 17, in St Petersburg for the thirtieth time.

Overview

Antwerp, the first half of the 10th century. The Duke of Brabant has died, leaving his children Elsa and Gottfried as wards of his kinsman, Friedrich von Telramund, who has also been granted the right to Elsa’s hand in marriage. One day Elsa and Gottfried went to the forest, and Elsa returned alone. Suspecting Elsa of having murdered her brother in collusion with an unknown lover, Telramund has married Ortrud, the last descendant of an ancient noble family. In actual fact, Ortrud has used witchcraft to transform Gottfried into a swan, and it is she who has convinced Telramund of Elsa’s guilt.

An innocent princess is accused of a terrible crime. Her situation seems desperate, but then an unknown intercessor appears - a fearless knight. God's judgment is being carried out, the villain is put to shame, the people rejoice, the knight leads the princess down the aisle. The plot is very familiar; but it is precisely from the moment at which most of these stories end that the most important thing begins in Lohengrin. Having exhausted the external conflict, Wagner focuses on the internal. For all its slow epicness, Lohengrin is extremely psychological. Having captivated the audience with visions of the "subtle world" in the orchestral introduction, decisively putting an end to the unfair trial in the first act, Wagner then - over the course of two acts - unfolds a tense psychological drama. There are quite a few operas about love, but it is in Lohengrin that the theme of love is developed deeply and consistently to the point of ruthlessness. What does unconditional love (or, as they say now, “unconditional acceptance”) mean? Are there limits to trust and self-giving in love? Is there a right to know? Right to hide? Where is the measure of human freedom and responsibility? Wagner brought together two characters ideally suited to each other and made sure that harmony between them was impossible. This situation shocked him to tears; he even tried to remake the ending, but he became convinced that Lohengrin could only end in this way and not otherwise. Written during the years of social and political unrest in the middle of the 19th century by an opposition composer, the opera Lohengrin is extremely pessimistic: the mission has failed, the kingdom of the Grail cannot be built on earth. Although the detective line in the plot ends happily - the missing boy returns and, probably, will be a good ruler of Brabant - the general line ends more tragically than even in Tristan, where the lovers, albeit in another world, nevertheless united.
At the same time, Lohengrin is by no means a gloomy opera: on the contrary, it is all permeated with the unearthly light of the Grail, the transparent ether of the mountainous kingdom. The composer created this radiance with musical means, and the artists who designed the Mariinsky "Lohengrin" according to the sketches of the Lviv visionary stage designer Yevgeny Lysyk, embodied it in paint. The "Gothic" scenography sounds like a majestic visual chord, and the musicians create a picturesque vocal and symphonic canvas, skillfully finishing every detail. The performance of the Mariinsky Theater fulfills Wagner's dream of the synthesis of the arts, of the unity of the audible and the visible into an integral and powerful artistic image. Lohengrin is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition.

Synopsis

Act I
King Heinrich der Vogler (Henry the Fowler) of Saxony has come to Brabant to recruit knights for his wars against the advancing enemy armies. By the shore of the River Scheldt he encounters Telramund, who accuses Elsa of murdering her brother and claiming the ducal throne. The King summons Elsa. Rather than answering the charge, she recounts her dream of a knight in shining armour who descends from the skies to rescue her from such accusations. Unable to reach a verdict as to whether she is guilty or innocent, the King announces trial by combat, leaving judgement to God. Telramund is prepared to fight, but who will defend Elsa? After twice repeated calls by the royal herald and Elsa’s fervent prayers, Lohengrin appears. He comes ashore from a longboat drawn by a snow-white swan. Lohengrin is prepared to defend Elsa’s honour and marry her on one condition: she must never ask his name. Elsa consents. Lohengrin wins the duel against Telramund but spares the latter’s life.

Act II
The citadel of Antwerp at night. The outcast Telramund and Ortrud are lurking in the shadows; he accuses her of deceit. Ortrud derides his cowardice, claiming that Lohengrin used evil magic powers to win the duel. To conquer Lohengrin, she and Telramund must convince Elsa to break her oath and ask the forbidden question. Elsa appears at her window; she is filled with happiness. Ortrud rouses Elsa’s pity and, affected by Ortrud’s sobs, she admits her to her chambers. Ortrud sows seeds of doubt in Elsa’s mind by suggesting that her unknown protector might one day vanish as mysteriously as he appeared. At daybreak, the herald announces Elsa and Lohengrin’s impending marriage; Telramund is to be banished. Lohengrin refuses the dukedom, wishing to be known only as “Protector” of Brabant; he will lead the army of Brabant against its foes. The wedding procession begins. On the steps of the church, Ortrud – following after Elsa – suddenly accuses Lohengrin of witchcraft. Telramund accuses him of the same deed. But only Elsa is entitled to demand that the knight reveal his secret. Elsa is confused, but in the end decides not to ask and the wedding ceremony continues.

Act III
A wedding procession accompanies the newlyweds to their chamber, where Telramund and his two co-conspirators are lying in wait. Lohengrin and Elsa, alone for the first time, speak of their love. However, Elsa’s anxiety grows ever more intense. When, at last, she asks Lohengrin the fateful question Telramund and his vassals suddenly appear. Telramund falls, slain by Lohengrin’s sword. Lohengrin announces that he will answer Elsa in the presence of the King.
The King welcomes the knights who have gathered to fight the enemy. Telramund’s dead body is carried in, followed by the grief-stricken Elsa and the gloomily triumphant Lohengrin. He declares that he cannot lead the King’s troops into battle. In self-defence he killed Telramund; he accuses the latter’s wife of breaking her vows to him. The knight reveals his secret: he is the son of Parsifal, sent to earth by the brotherhood of the Holy Grail to protect the innocent and the oppressed. The knights of the Grail have immense power albeit under one condition: no-one must ever know their names and from where they have come. Lohengrin’s secret has been revealed and now he must depart. The swan appears, drawing the longboat. Lohengrin bids a fond farewell to Elsa: one more year and the beautiful bird’s tragic fate would have come to an end. The Grail would have set the bird free and restored Elsa’s brother to her. Lohengrin gives her three gifts for Gottfried when he at last comes back: a sword, a horn and a ring. In a frenzy of rage Ortrud reveals that it was she who transformed Gottfried into a swan, casting a golden chain around his neck. Lohengrin prays silently; the evil spell is broken. The swan is transformed into the handsome young Gottfried. Lohengrin proclaims him Duke of Brabant and departs. Elsa falls senseless in her brother’s arms.

Summary

The people of the Duchy of Brabant are divided by quarrels and political infighting; also, a devious hostile power left over from the region's pagan past is seeking to subvert the prevailing monotheistic government and to return the Duchy to pagan rule. A mysterious knight, sent by God and possessing superhuman charisma and fighting ability, arrives to unite and strengthen the people, and to defend the innocent noble woman Elsa from a false accusation of murder, but he imposes a condition: the people must follow him without knowing his identity. Elsa in particular must never ask his name, or his heritage, or his origin. The conspirators attempt to undermine her faith in her rescuer, to create doubt among the people, and to force him to leave.

Act 1

King Henry the Fowler has arrived in Brabant, where he has assembled the German tribes in order to expel the marauding Hungarians from his dominions. He also needs to settle a dispute involving the disappearance of the child-Duke Gottfried of Brabant. The Duke's guardian, Count Friedrich von Telramund, has accused the Duke's older sister, Elsa, of murdering her brother in order to become Duchess of Brabant. Telramund calls upon the King to punish Elsa and to make him the new Duke of Brabant.

The King calls for Elsa to answer Telramund's accusation. Elsa does not answer the King's inquiries, only lamenting her brother's fate. The King declares that he cannot resolve the matter and will leave it to God's judgment through ordeal by combat. Telramund, a strong and seasoned warrior, agrees enthusiastically. When the King asks Elsa who shall be her champion, Elsa describes a knight she has beheld in her dreams (Narrative: "Alone in dark days").

Twice the Herald calls for a champion to step forward, but gets no response. Elsa kneels and prays that God may send her champion to her. A boat drawn by a swan appears on the river and in it stands a knight in shining armour. He disembarks, dismisses the swan, respectfully greets the king, and asks Elsa if she will have him as her champion and marry him. Elsa kneels in front of him and places her honour in his keeping. He asks only one thing in return for his service: Elsa must never ask him his name or where he has come from. Elsa agrees to this.

Telramund's supporters advise him to withdraw because he cannot prevail against the Knight's powers, but he proudly refuses. The chorus prays to God ("Herr und Gott") for victory for the one whose cause is just. Ortrud, Telramund's wife, does not join the prayer, but privately expresses confidence that Telramund will win. The combat commences. The unknown Knight defeats Telramund but spares his life. Taking Elsa by the hand, he declares her innocent. The crowd exits, cheering and celebrating.

Act 2

Night in the courtyard outside the cathedral

Telramund and Ortrud, banished from court, listen unhappily to the distant party-music. Ortrud reveals that she is a pagan witch (daughter of Radbod Duke of Frisia), and tries to revive Telramund's courage, assuring him that her people (and he) are destined to rule the kingdom again. She plots to induce Elsa to violate the mysterious knight's only condition.

When Elsa appears on the balcony before dawn, she hears Ortrud lamenting and pities her. As Elsa descends to open the castle door, Ortrud prays to her pagan gods, Wodan and Freia, for malice, guile, and cunning, in order to deceive Elsa and restore pagan rule to the region. Ortrud warns Elsa that since she knows nothing about her rescuer, he could leave at any time as suddenly as he came, but Elsa is sure of the Knight's virtues. The two women go into the castle. Left alone outside, Telramund vows to bring about the Knight's downfall.

The sun rises and the people assemble. The Herald announces that Telramund is now banished, and that anyone who follows Telramund shall be considered an outlaw by the law of the land. In addition, he announces that the King has offered to make the unnamed knight the Duke of Brabant; however, the Knight has declined the title, and prefers to be known only as "Protector of Brabant". The Herald further announces that the Knight will lead the people to glorious new conquests, and will celebrate the marriage of himself and Elsa. In the back of the crowd, four noblemen quietly express misgivings to each other because the Knight has rescinded their privileges and is calling them to arms. Telramund secretly draws the four noblemen aside and assures them that he will regain his position and stop the Knight, by accusing him of sorcery.

As Elsa and her attendants are about to enter the church, Ortrud rushes to the front of the procession and challenges Elsa to explain who the Knight is and why anyone should follow him. Their conversation is interrupted by the entrance of the King with the Knight. Elsa tells both of them that Ortrud was interrupting the ceremony. The King tells Ortrud to step aside, then leads Elsa and the Knight toward the church. Just as they are about to enter the church, Telramund enters. He claims that his defeat in combat was invalid because the Knight did not give his name (trial by combat traditionally being open only to established citizens), then accuses the Knight of sorcery. He demands that the Knight must reveal his name; otherwise the King should rule the trial by combat invalid. The Knight refuses to reveal his identity and claims that only one person in the world has the right to make him do so: his beloved Elsa, and she has pledged not to exercise that right. Elsa, though visibly shaken and uncertain, assures him of her confidence. King Henry refuses Telramund's questions, and the nobles of Brabant and Saxony praise and honor the Knight. Elsa falls back into the crowd where Ortrud and Telramund try to intimidate her, but the Knight forces them both to leave the ceremony, and consoles Elsa. Elsa takes one last look at the banished Ortrud, then enters the church with the wedding procession.

Act 3

Scene 1: The bridal chamber

Elsa and her new husband are ushered in with the well-known bridal chorus, and they express their love for each other. Ortrud's words, however, have made an impression on Elsa; she laments that her name sounds so sweet on her husband's lips but she cannot utter his name. She asks him to tell her his name when no one else is around, but at all instances he refuses. Finally, despite his warnings, she asks the Knight the fatal questions. Before the Knight can answer, Telramund and his four recruits rush into the room in order to attack him. The Knight defeats and kills Telramund. Then, he sorrowfully turns to Elsa and asks her to follow him to the King, to whom he will now reveal his secrets.

Scene 2: On the banks of the Scheldt (as in Act 1)

The troops arrive equipped for war. Telramund's corpse is brought in. Elsa comes forward, then the Knight. He tells the King that Elsa has broken her promise, and discloses his identity ("In fernem Land") by recounting the story of the Holy Grail and of Monsalvat. He reveals himself as Lohengrin, Knight of the Grail and son of King Parsifal, sent to protect an unjustly accused woman. The laws of the Holy Grail say that Knights of the Grail must remain anonymous. If their identity is revealed, they must return home.

As Lohengrin sadly bids farewell to Elsa, the swan-boat reappears. Lohengrin tells Elsa that if she had kept her promise, she could have recovered her lost brother, and gives her his sword, horn and ring, for he is to become the future leader of Brabant. As Lohengrin tries to get in the boat, Ortrud appears. She tells Elsa that the swan is actually Gottfried, Elsa's brother, whom she cursed to become a swan. The people consider Ortrud guilty of witchcraft. Lohengrin prays and the swan turns back into young Gottfried. Lohengrin declares him the Duke of Brabant. Ortrud sinks as she sees her plans thwarted.

A dove descends from heaven and, taking the place of the swan at the head of the boat, leads Lohengrin to the castle of the Holy Grail. Elsa is stricken with grief and falls to the ground dead.

The Mariinsky Theatre is a historic theatre of opera and ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Opened in 1860, it became the preeminent music theatre of late 19th-century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. Through most of the Soviet era, it was known as the Kirov Theatre. Today, the Mariinsky Theatre is home to the Mariinsky Ballet, Mariinsky Opera and Mariinsky Orchestra. Since Yuri Temirkanov's retirement in 1988, the conductor Valery Gergiev has served as the theatre's general director.

The theatre is named after Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Tsar Alexander II. There is a bust of the Empress in the main entrance foyer. The theatre's name has changed throughout its history, reflecting the political climate of the time.

The theatre building is commonly called the Mariinsky Theatre. The companies that operate within it have for brand recognition purposes retained the Kirov name, acquired during the Soviet era to commemorate the assassinated Leningrad Communist Party leader Sergey Kirov (1886–1934).

The Imperial drama, opera and ballet troupe in Saint Petersburg was established in 1783, at the behest of Catherine the Great, although an Italian ballet troupe had performed at the Russian court since the early 18th century. Originally, the ballet and opera performances were given in the wooden Karl Knipper Theatre on Tsaritsa Meadow, near the present-day Tripartite Bridge (also known as the Little Theatre or the Maly Theatre). The Hermitage Theatre, next door to the Winter Palace, was used to host performances for an elite audience of aristocratic guests invited by the Empress.

A permanent theatre building for the new company of opera and ballet artists was designed by Antonio Rinaldi and opened in 1783. Known as the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre the structure was situated on Carousel Square, which was renamed Theatre Square in honour of the building. Both names – "Kamenny" (Russian word for "stone") and "Bolshoi" (Russian word for "big") – were coined to distinguish it from the wooden Little Theatre. In 1836, the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre was renovated to a design by Albert Cavos (son of Catterino Cavos, an opera composer), and served as the principal theatre of the Imperial Ballet and opera.

On 29 January 1849, the Equestrian circus (Конный цирк) opened on Theatre Square. This was also the work of the architect Cavos. The building was designed to double as a theatre. It was a wooden structure in the then-fashionable neo-Byzantine style. Ten years later, when this circus burnt down, Albert Cavos rebuilt it as an opera and ballet house with the largest stage in the world. With a seating capacity of 1,625 and a U-shaped Italian-style auditorium, the theatre opened on 2 October 1860, with a performance of A Life for the Tsar. The new theatre was named Mariinsky after its imperial patroness, Empress Maria Alexandrovna.

Under Yuri Temirkanov, Principal Conductor from 1976 to 1988, the Opera Company continued to stage innovative productions of both modern and classic Russian operas. Although functioning separately from the Theatre’s Ballet Company, since 1988 both companies have been under the artistic leadership of Valery Gergiev as Artistic Director of the entire Theatre.

The Opera Company has entered a new era of artistic excellence and creativity. Since 1993, Gergiev’s impact on opera there has been enormous. Firstly, he reorganized the company’s operations and established links with many of the world's great opera houses, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Opéra Bastille, La Scala, La Fenice, the Israeli Opera, the Washington National Opera and the San Francisco Opera. Today, the Opera Company regularly tours to most of these cities.

Gergiev has also been innovative as far as Russian opera is concerned: in 1989, there was an all-Mussorgsky festival featuring the composer’s entire operatic output. Similarly, many of Prokofiev’s operas were presented from the late 1990s. Operas by non-Russian composers began to be performed in their original languages, which helped the Opera Company to incorporate world trends. The annual international "Stars of the White Nights Festival" in Saint Petersburg, started by Gergiev in 1993, has also put the Mariinsky on the world’s cultural map. That year, as a salute to the imperial origins of the Mariinsky, Verdi's La forza del destino, which received its premiere in Saint Petersburg in 1862, was produced with its original sets, costumes and scenery. Since then, it has become a characteristic of the "White Nights Festival" to present the premieres from the company’s upcoming season during this magical period, when the hours of darkness practically disappear as the summer solstice approaches.

Presently, the Company lists on its roster 22 sopranos (of whom Anna Netrebko may be the best known); 13 mezzo-sopranos (with Olga Borodina familiar to US and European audiences); 23 tenors; eight baritones; and 14 basses. With Gergiev in charge overall, there is a Head of Stage Administration, a Stage Director, Stage Managers and Assistants, along with 14 accompanists.
