Programme

Overview

Join the RCM for a bold celebration of Michael Finnissy’s 80th birthday and Morton Feldman’s centenary in three chamber concerts that push the boundaries of sound. From Aboriginal-inspired textures to spatial ensembles and minimalist soundscapes, this series unveils the radical spirit of avant-garde music.Celebrate two titans of avant-garde composition at the Royal College of Music in a trilogy of chamber concerts honoring Michael Finnissy’s 80th birthday and Morton Feldman’s centenary. The programme opens with Finnissy’s Ouraa, where folk-inflected motifs and percussive string techniques evoke the rhythmic pulse of Australian Aboriginal traditions. In Mu-Fa, two identical ensembles take the hall as a playground of fragmented melodies, their instruments weaving across the space in a radical exploration of texture and notation. The series culminates in Feldman’s expansive chamber work, a tapestry of delicate repetition and spacious silences reflecting his affinity with minimalist theatre. Each concert invites audiences into bold sonic landscapes where innovation, ritual and radical sound converge.
