Semyon Skigin was born in Leningrad and studied at the State Conservatory of his hometown with professors Savchinsky and Perelman.
Since 1972 he has played as a soloist with the Leningrad Philharmonic. In 1975 he won the International Competition for Piano Accompaniment in Rio de Janeiro. From 1978-1981, Skigin was guest professor at the Academy of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden and since 1990 he has been Professor of Lied Accompaniment at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. His discography includes complete recordings of vocal chamber music by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Rachmaninov and individual works of u.a. Shostakovich, Verdi and Wagner with soloists such as Sergei Leiferkus, Nuccia Focile, Nina Rautio, Olga Borodina and others. Semjon Skigin gives numerous masterclasses for song interpretation at leading conservatories. At the Stuttgart Opera he accompanies the 5th Song Concert.
