About
The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra is the concert orchestra of the state capital Stuttgart.
Founding
The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in September 1924 as the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra. A rapid artistic rise made it possible to hire conductors and soloists such as Leo Blech, Carl Flesch, Hans Knappertsbusch, Hermann Abendroth, Fritz Kreisler, Carl Schuricht or Felix Weingartner. In 1933 the orchestra was divided. The Jewish and most of the foreign musicians were released. Some of the musicians came to the orchestra of the Reichssender Stuttgart, while others continued to work as the Gau Württemberg-Hohenzollern State Orchestra.
New beginning after 1945
After the war, mainly members of the former state orchestra came together under the name of the Stuttgart Philharmonic. Hermann Hildebrandt, Willem van Hoogstraten, Hans Hörner, Antonio de Almeida and Alexander Paulmüller were the chief conductors from 1949 to 1972. Under Hans Zanotelli, artistic director from 1972 to 1985, the Philharmonic Orchestra developed into a powerful and renowned body of sound.
In 1976 the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart took over the orchestra. Under Wolf-Dieter Hauschild, chief conductor from 1985 to 1991, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra won high recognition at home and abroad. Carlos Kalmar continued the tradition of his predecessors from 1991 to 1995. From 1995 to 2002, General Music Director Jörg-Peter Weigle headed the orchestra as chief conductor. Walter Weller, who has been closely associated with the orchestra for years, was appointed honorary conductor in October 2003. Just a few weeks after his last concert with the Stuttgart Philharmonic, Walter Weller died in June 2015.
From September 2004 to 2013 Gabriel Feltz was chief conductor of the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra and general music director of the state capital Stuttgart. His rehearsals and the constant expansion of the repertoire have contributed significantly to the development of the orchestra. In 2007, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra received the Prix Rachmaninoff under his direction in recognition of the most extensive performance cycle of Rachmaninoff's works in German-speaking countries to date. In autumn 2015/2016 Dan Ettinger followed him as the orchestra's preferred candidate in this position. The highlight of his first season was a concert performance of the "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini under his direction with international star castings, the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno and the Aurelius Boys' Choir.
Michael Stille has been responsible for management and management since September 2001. Since January 2017, Michael Stille as artistic director and Tilman Dost as commercial director have been the dual leaders of the orchestra. Since 1994, the Stuttgart Philharmonic has also had its own building, the Gustav Siegle House, which serves as a rehearsal location and concert hall for children's and youth concerts, afternoon and night owl concerts. The orchestra's subscription concerts take place in the Beethoven Hall of the Liederhalle.
