Programme
Overview
Celebrate Sally Beamish’s 70th birthday with the Elias String Quartet in an evening of two newly commissioned quartets inspired by Schumann’s chamber masterpieces. Donald Grant’s Scottish folk song arrangements add vibrant Celtic warmth. A captivating fusion of Romantic depth and folk vitality from a leading chamber ensemble. In celebration of Sally Beamish’s 70th birthday, the Elias String Quartet brings to life two of the three quartets it commissioned from her, each drawing its creative spark from the intimate voice of Robert Schumann’s chamber masterworks. Beamish’s compositions intertwine Romantic-era lyricism with contemporary harmonic inventiveness—unfolding through intricate dialogues that feel both introspective and boldly expressive. The evening continues with violist Donald Grant’s sequence of Scottish folk song arrangements, where rustic airs and spirited reels are reframed by the quartet’s nuanced phrasing and dynamic precision. Together, these works guide the audience from the emotional depths of nineteenth-century traditions to the vibrant pulse of Celtic heritage, promising an evening of rich textures and heartfelt resonance.
