Programme
Overview
Celebrate I Fagiolini’s 40th anniversary with a captivating vocal voyage: Victoria’s radiant Renaissance polyphony, sumptuous Elizabethan and Italian madrigals, thrilling contemporary premieres, and a cabaret-inspired finale. Four centuries of choral mastery in one unforgettable evening.Founded in Oxford by Robert Hollingworth, I Fagiolini celebrates four decades of innovative vocal performance with a programme that sweeps through its most cherished repertoire. The concert opens with Victoria’s luminous eight-voice setting of Alma Redemptoris mater, where pristine harmonies evoke the serene beauty of Renaissance sacred polyphony. Listeners are then transported into the lush world of secular madrigals from Elizabethan England’s pastoral idylls and the dramatic flair of Baroque Italy, each phrase imbued with textural nuance and emotional depth. The programme then pulses with freshness as premieres by Joanna Marsh and Adrian Williams introduce contemporary tonalities and rhythmic vitality. An interlude of Daniel-Lesur’s Song of Songs cycle follows, offering moments of hushed devotion and sensuous lyricism rendered with exquisite clarity. To cap the celebration, the ensemble embraces a cabaret guise for a performance by the ‘Little Beans’, whose cool, pared-down aesthetic and intimate interplay blurs the line between concert hall and nightclub. From sacred to secular, ancient to avant-garde, this anniversary recital is a masterclass in vocal artistry, inviting audiences to experience the full sweep of I Fagiolini’s extraordinary journey.
