Programme
Overview
Experience the JACK Quartet’s spellbinding debut programme at Wigmore Hall, showcasing Kronos Quartet’s Fifty for the Future commissions. From Sky Macklay’s hypnotic Vertebrae to Mark Applebaum’s universe-shifting Flashlight, prepare for an evening of unwavering focus and exhilarating energy.Join the JACK Quartet for the inaugural performance of three back-to-back programmes at Wigmore Hall, dedicated to works commissioned under Kronos Quartet’s Fifty for the Future initiative. Sky Macklay’s Vertebrae surges through jagged scale fragments with a raw, bone-like resonance, each note etched in startling clarity as the quartet navigates its percussive contours. Mark Applebaum’s Flashlight then transports the audience into an alternate classical realm where Haydn’s spirit collides with avant-garde textures, yielding kaleidoscopic harmonies and unexpected rhythmic twists. With their trademark precision, deep concentration and electrifying vitality, the JACK Quartet redefines contemporary chamber music in an evening of immersive discovery.

With its vibrant sense of adventure, the Hall consistently captures the public imagination and regularly presents artistic projects which are unique to the UK’s musical life.

Wigmore Hall’s focus is on great musical works, best experienced with a powerful sense of immediacy. The repertoire extends from the Renaissance to contemporary jazz and new commissions from today’s most exciting composers.

Bringing this music to life are the world’s most sought-after soloists and chamber musicians. Wigmore Hall also provides a showcase for exceptional young artists — many making their professional London debuts — and remains an essential platform as their careers flourish.

Discreetly nestled in central London, the Hall – renowned for its intimacy, crystalline acoustic and beautiful interior, complete with an Arts and Crafts cupola above the stage – has a capacity of 552 seats, but draws in audiences from far and wide through its enterprising use of digital media and its ambitious Learning programme.

Since 2005, the Hall has grown attendance across its entire programme by over 60 per cent. All in all, it now presents around 500 concerts every year, selling a total of 200,000 tickets, and stages as many Learning events. Wigmore Hall plays host to a biennial International Song Competition, and a triennial International String Quartet Competition, drawing exceptionally talented young musicians from around the world keen to embark on significant recital careers.

Blending heritage, artistic ambition, and inclusivity, Wigmore Hall concerts stand at the heart of the UK’s musical landscape. A place where tradition and innovation meet, the Hall continues to shape the future of chamber music and song, championing both revered masterpieces and bold new commissions.
