The programme opens with Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A major, K.581, where graceful melodies intertwine with warm string textures, before plunging into Brahms's darker, Romantic Quintet in B minor with its rich harmonies and brooding depth. Between these masterpieces, the ensemble presents Shostakovich's shortest string quartet, a compact tour de force filled with sudden mood shifts and rapid-fire contrasts. All in all, it now presents around 500 concerts every year, selling a total of 200,000 tickets, and stages as many Learning events. Wigmore Hall plays host to a biennial International Song Competition, and a triennial International String Quartet Competition, drawing exceptionally talented young musicians from around the world keen to embark on significant recital careers.
