Programme
Overview
Magdalena Kožená brings Janáček’s soul-stirring Czech love songs to life alongside pianist Malcolm Martineau. From Wolf’s vivid Mörike Lieder to Schoenberg’s 1901 cabaret pieces, this recital promises an evening of unforgettable contrasts and emotional depth.Renowned Czech mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, hailing from Janáček’s birthplace, invites you to an intimate recital that delves into the very heart of his music. Joined by acclaimed pianist Malcolm Martineau, she unveils a programme beginning with Janáček’s haunting love songs in their original Czech—every nuance of longing and tenderness articulated with crystalline clarity. The recital then unfolds into the lush harmonies and delicate poetry of Hugo Wolf’s Mörike Lieder, where vivid emotional contrasts—rippling joy and shadowed melancholy—are painted in rich tonal colours. In the second half, the duo embraces the bold theatricality of Arnold Schoenberg’s 1901 cabaret songs, marrying playful wit and biting irony in compositions that foreshadow modernism. Throughout the evening, Kožená’s expressive phrasing and Martineau’s sensitive accompaniment transport listeners through a spectrum of moods, weaving together folk-inflected melodies, intimate confessions, and sharp-edged satire. This is an evening of extraordinary depth and contrast, where every phrase resonates with the spirit of Central European song.
