Programme
Overview
Join a stellar string trio for an evening of lyrical depth and sparkling wit as they bring Martinů’s Duo No.1 and Madrigals, inspired by Mozart and Elizabethan song, to life. Then be transported to early 20th-century London with Dohnányi’s charming five-movement Serenade, partly composed during a 1904 tour. An unforgettable fusion of history, passion and humour awaits.Tonight’s concert invites listeners on a voyage from the vibrant modernism of 1920s Paris to the sunlit arcades of Edwardian London, guided by a distinguished trio of violin, viola and cello. The program opens with Bohuslav Martinů’s Duo No.1, premiered a century ago, where solo violin and cello engage in a spirited, poetic dialogue that balances bold gesture with tender lyricism. Next, Martinů’s Madrigals draw on Mozart’s transparent textures and the modal grace of Tudor-song, weaving playful counterpoints between the strings. The evening culminates in Ernő Dohnányi’s five-movement Serenade—crafted in part during a 1904 London tour—where graceful dances and a spirited finale echo the wit and elegance of early 20th-century salons. With each note rendered in crystalline detail and expressive warmth, the ensemble offers a richly textured tribute to the composers’ intertwined legacies and the enduring power of the string trio.
