Programme
Overview
Two tales of longing converge in a groundbreaking fusion of kabuki and song: Chikamatsu’s Yasuna meets Schubert’s Winterreise in a meditative performance of grief, dance, and melody. Journey from silence to communion as East meets West in haunting harmony.Step into a realm where the poetic sorrow of Schubert’s Winterreise intertwines with Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s 1818 kabuki drama Yasuna. Driven by grief, two solitary souls—Schubert’s Wanderer, cast adrift by loss, and Yasuna, torn by forbidden love—embark on parallel journeys into darkness, seeking solace in sound, silence, and dance. Under a spare, evocative set, each narrative unfolds through plaintive song cycles and dreamlike michiyuki dances, their rhythms tracing the fragile boundaries between solitude and communion. The Wanderer’s voice rises in haunting arias, while the kabuki actor’s kimono-swept movements convey layers of longing and regret. Music and movement merge in a meditative atmosphere, where every note and step becomes an intimate confession. This evocative convergence of East and West illuminates the universal quest for connection, transforming loss into a transcendent act of remembrance.
