Overview
Embark on a captivating journey through French chamber music with the Purcell School Chamber Soloists, led by baritone horn virtuoso Mike Cavanagh. From the lush lyricism of Farrenc, Fauré and Gounod to the witty innovations of Milhaud, Ibert and Poulenc, this concert blends Romantic elegance with early 20th-century flair.Under the direction of baritone horn virtuoso Mike Cavanagh, the Purcell School Chamber Soloists present a captivating programme of French music spanning the late Romantic period and the dawn of the 20th century. The evening opens with Louise Farrenc’s richly woven chamber textures, where evocative melodic lines hint at Baroque grace and folk-inspired motifs. Gabriel Fauré’s sublime lyricism follows, unfolding through shimmering strings and the horn’s warm resonance, before the serene devotion of Charles Gounod’s melodies casts a tranquil glow. Darius Milhaud then ushers in vibrant rhythms and jazz-tinged colours, while Jacques Ibert’s playful interludes reveal a lighter, more mischievous side. The concert culminates in Francis Poulenc’s spirited originality, a fitting finale to a journey through Romantic depth and modern inventiveness in an intimate chamber setting.
