From Dowland and Schubert to Argento and Britten’s Songs from the Chinese, experience an intimate exploration of cultural memory and the timeless bond of song.Songs from Our Ancestors invites audiences on a one-hour musical odyssey reflecting the intertwined heritage of tenor Ian Bostridge and guitarist Xuefei Yang. Drawing on four centuries of Western and Eastern repertoire, the programme pairs John Dowland’s Renaissance lute songs, Franz Schubert’s lieder, Dominick Argento’s twentieth-century miniatures, and Benjamin Britten’s Songs from the Chinese, setting verses from the ancient Book of Songs.
