Overview

International Vocal Competition of The Elena Obraztsova Foundation. “José Carreras Grand Prix”, the unique international tenor competition, first took place in 2018. The competition was organized by The Elena Obraztsova Foundation, with the iconic tenor José Carreras as the head of jury. The purposes of “José Carreras Grand Prix” were and are: finding and promoting of talented singers. The competition helps motivating them, and the winners are presented to either wider audience, or to Russian and foreign producers, as well as developing international contacts in the realm of opera.

Laureates of the competition debuted in Moscow at prestigious venues, eg Conservatory Grand Hall, and abroad, in Berlin, and in Musikverein Wien.

It was decided to expand the competition, to spread “the tenor principal” to the other opera voices. Young singers are invited to take part in the competition: 18 – 32 years old sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, and 18 – 34 years old baritones and basses. For every type of voice the winner will be chosen, all in all 15 prizes and one Grand Prix.

There were 287 applications from countries as divers as Austria, Azerbaijan, Argentina, Armenia, Bulgaria, and Japan, to name a few.
This year, the head of jury is the great José Carreras, while Dame Gwyneth Jones DBE, Dolora Zajick, Makvala Kasrashvili, Raffaella Murdolo, Christina Scheppelmann, Alessandro Ariosi, Lorenzo Bavaj, Dmitry Vdovin, and David Giménez invited to be members of the jury.
“Zaryadye” Hall hosts 2 events of this great competition, the opening gala, November 30, and the closing, December 6.

The competition is a part of The Elena Obraztsova Foundation’s international project “Golosa Naslediya” (“Voices of Heritage”) supported by a grant of the President of Russia.

Zaryadye Hall is a concert hall in Moscow located in the Zaryadye Natural Landscape Park. Valery Gergiev, Denis Matsuev, Anna Netrebko, Daniil Trifonov and Ildar Abdrazakov spoke at the opening ceremony.

The peculiarity of Zaryadye Hall is its strict genre correspondence. No pop performances are planned in the hall. The Zaryadye Hall received world-class performers on the stages of the Big and Small Halls, introduced the audience to the work of such musicians as mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozhena (Czech Republic), conductor Andrew Parrot and Taverner Choir, Consort and Players (Great Britain), countertenor Jakub Josef Orlinsky ( Poland), Quatuor Diotima string quartet (France). And these artists, in turn, discovered Moscow and Russia.

The hall hosts concerts of not only outstanding masters, but also young artists, a series of topical musical projects: Sound Up, New Classics. The Zaryadye Hall hosted the world premiere of the ballet "Little Red Riding Hood" by the famous dancer Sergei Polunin. The repertoire of the hall also includes educational programs for children and adults: excursions, lectures, master classes, and interactive concert programs.
