About

In 2020, Diego Torre sings Elèazar (La Juive), Foresto (Attila) and Radames (Aida) for Opera Australia; he also sings Canio (Pagliacci) for Michigan Opera Theatre and Ópera de Oviedo.

Recent international engagements have included Dick Johnson (La fanciulla del West) in Mexico City, Canio for the Grand Théâtre de Genève and Calaf (Turandot) and Manrico (Il trovatore) for Teatro Regio di Torino; he sang Cavaradossi (Tosca) in China and Saarbrücken, Calaf in Oslo, Corrado (Il corsaro) in Parma and Cavaradossi, Canio and Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana) in Genoa.

A leading tenor at Opera Australia for many years, Diego’s most celebrated roles include Radames, Turiddu, Canio, Calaf, Cavaradossi, Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Rodolfo (La bohème), Gustavus (Un ballo in maschera), The Duke (Rigoletto), Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra), Rodolfo (Luisa Miller) and the title role in Don Carlo.

Born in Mexico City, Diego Torre was a Domingo-Thornton Young Artist at Los Angeles Opera, where he made his company debut as Don José in performances of Carmen.  In his debut season with Wolf Trap Opera Company, Diego sang Conte Ivrea in Verdi's Un giorno di regno, Captain in Candide, and Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos.  He was invited to return to Wolf Trap in the summer of 2009 to play Rodolfo in La bohème, where The Washington Times said of his performance, "His passion was real, his heartbreak was immense, and his commanding, gloriously sculpted instrument makes him an up-and-coming talent to be watched."

He was then engaged for the 2009/2010 season at The Metropolitan Opera to play the Messenger in Aida and Federico in Stiffelio. This was followed by Masaniello in La muette de Portici for Dessau Opera, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor for Savonlinna Opera Festival Finland and covering for Plácido Domingo in the title role of Il Postino at Los Angeles Opera.

Since then, performances have included Gabriele Adorno at Teatro Regio di Parma; Rodolfo in Oslo and Darmstadt; Cavaradossi in Florida, Karlsruhe, Boston and Finland; Don José (Carmen) at Eugene Opera and Darmstadt and Foresto (Attila) for San Francisco Opera.
