About
Hong Kong Ballet is one of Asia’s leading ballet companies, representing Hong Kong through a distinctive combination of classical tradition, contemporary creativity and international artistic collaboration. Founded in 1979, the company has grown into an internationally recognised ensemble of nearly 50 dancers from around the world, presenting performances both in Hong Kong and on international tours.
Under the artistic direction of Septime Webre, who joined the company in 2017, Hong Kong Ballet has developed a broad repertoire ranging from enduring classical masterpieces to contemporary works and original full-length productions. Its artistic collaborations have included choreographers such as Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, Jiří Kylián, Nacho Duato and Trey McIntyre, alongside new works created especially for the company.
A distinctive feature of Hong Kong Ballet is its ability to bring together the heritage of Western classical ballet with the cultural character of Hong Kong. Alongside productions of works such as The Sleeping Beauty, the company develops original interpretations and new creations that explore contemporary themes, local identity and Asian cultural influences. Its 2026 production of The Sleeping Beauty, for example, features a new production by Vladimir Malakhov with sets and costumes by Jordi Roig.
The company also plays an important role beyond the main stage, maintaining education and community programmes designed to make ballet accessible to wider audiences. Its international tours have further established Hong Kong Ballet as an ambassador for the city’s vibrant performing-arts scene.
For audiences visiting Hong Kong, a performance by Hong Kong Ballet offers an opportunity to experience classical ballet through the perspective of one of Asia’s most dynamic cultural centres — where international artistic traditions meet the energy, identity and creativity of contemporary Hong Kong.
