Gstaad Menuhin Festival 2026

The Gstaad Menuhin Festival 2026 marks a historic milestone as it celebrates its 70th anniversary, opening a new chapter under the artistic leadership of violinist and conductor Daniel Hope. From 16 July to 5 September 2026, the idyllic villages, churches, and mountain landscapes of the Swiss Saanenland once again become the setting for one of Europe’s most distinctive classical music festivals, where artistic excellence meets the tranquility of the Alps.

Programme
Sergei Prokofiev: Violin Sonata no. 1 in F minor, Op.80
Dmitri Shostakovich: Preludes, Op. 34
Overview

A summit meeting of two extraordinary talents: one of the world’s most sought-after pianists – who has already sparked multiple waves of enthusiasm at the Saanen Church – appears alongside a young compatriot shaped by the great Russian violin tradition.

Trained in Vienna by Boris Kuschnir, himself a student of the legendary David Oistrakh – and, remarkably, also of Dmitri Shostakovich! Following the profoundly moving Violin Sonata No. 1 by Sergei Prokofiev – the very work performed in 1953 at the composer’s funeral by its dedicatee David Oistrakh – Daniil Trifonov presents a powerful artistic statement: the 24 Preludes for Piano, Op. 34. Composed in Prokofiev’s early years, this cycle consciously takes its cue from Johann Sebastian Bach. Each prelude unfolds in its own major or minor key, together forming a complete and compelling panorama of all tonalities.

Venue Info

Saanen Church - Saanen
Location   Dorfstrasse, 3792

At the heart of the picturesque Alpine village of Saanen stands the historic Saanen Church, one of the most atmospheric and beloved venues of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival. Surrounded by traditional Swiss chalets and breathtaking mountain landscapes, this beautifully preserved church offers a setting where music, history, and spirituality come together in perfect harmony.

Dating back to the 15th century, Saanen Church is renowned for its elegant architecture, centuries-old wooden interior, and remarkable acoustics. Its intimate scale creates a unique connection between performers and audience, allowing every musical detail to be heard with exceptional clarity and warmth. The church’s serene atmosphere makes it particularly well suited to chamber music, solo recitals, sacred works, and vocal performances.

The venue occupies a special place in the history of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, founded by the legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin. From the festival’s earliest years, concerts in Saanen Church helped shape its distinctive identity, bringing world-class musicians to the tranquil surroundings of the Swiss Alps. Today, many of the festival’s most memorable performances continue to take place within its historic walls.

As evening light filters through the church windows and the mountains rise beyond the village rooftops, audiences experience music in an environment of extraordinary beauty and intimacy. The combination of outstanding artistry and the timeless character of the venue creates an atmosphere that is both inspiring and deeply moving.

Visitors attending concerts at Saanen Church enjoy not only exceptional musical performances but also the charm of one of Switzerland’s most enchanting Alpine communities, where tradition, culture, and natural beauty coexist seamlessly.
