The Hungarian State Opera is Hungary's leading cultural institution, which has been equally successful in representing various artistic genres since its foundation in 1884.
Budapest's Neo-Renaissance Opera House, an architectural masterpiece designed by Miklos Ibla, reopened in March 2022 after almost five years of extensive restoration and modernization. The historic building welcomes visitors and spectators, offering a constantly updated classical repertoire, and the recently opened new Eiffel Art Studios venue offers modern productions and modern dance.
In addition to internationally renowned Hungarian and foreign guest artists (including Erwin Schrott, Jonas Kaufmann, Placido Domingo, Bryn Terfel and Rene Pape in recent years), local troupes welcome the public. The Hungarian State Opera Orchestra is the oldest orchestra in Hungary. During its long history, the orchestra has featured such outstanding conductors as Gustav Mahler, Otto Klemperer, Serio Filoni, and in later years Pinchas Steinberg, Michel Plasson, Philippe Augustin, Michael Schoenwandt, and Peter Etwes.
Following the example of many other international opera houses and without departing from its own traditions, the Hungarian State Opera opened the Eva Marton Opera Studio in the summer of 2024. Its goal is to provide professional training for young opera singers after graduation, as well as to give them the opportunity to expand their stage experience at the beginning of their careers.
